11 Tips To Help Ward Off Infections During Cold & Flu Season

Kevin and I personally do not get the flu shot or any shots for that matter and neither of us has had so much as a sniffle. To be completely honest, I can not even remember the last time I had a cold or the flu and ask anyone in my family, I have an amazing memory! However, that does not mean that we do not take the appropriate precautions to insure that our immune systems are functioning optimally, especially during cold and flu season.

So, here are our 11 tips on how to keep your immune systems in tip-top shape!

1. Eat a well balanced, healthy, anti-inflammatory diet.

A large portion of the immune system resides in the gut, therefore if your gut is damaged or you consistently suffer from indigestion, your body will naturally use its additional resources to digest food and repair the gut instead of being able to use that energy to fully ward off nasty infections. Therefore, the next time you get heartburn, flatulence or bloating after a meal, don’t ignore it, put it off and do it again, instead consider this a sign that your gut and ultimately your immune system is trying to warn you that something is off. Starting an elimination diet can be a good way to determine what foods work best for you and maybe which ones you should stay away from until your gut has had a chance to properly heal. If determining what you should and shouldn’t eat is too overwhelming for you to do on your own, then you can always seek the professional advice of a holistic practitioner or someone or who specializes in BIE food sensitivity testing. If you are constantly getting sick it can be as easy as what you are or aren’t putting in your mouth. So don’t ignore poor digestion because there is so much more at play than just feeling uncomfortable for several hours after a meal.

2. Take at least 1,000-3,000mg of Lypospheric Vitamin C regularly or up 6,000 mg when you feel something coming on.

1,000 mg every hour up to 6 hours (1) if you are going to be around someone else who is sick. Unlike other vitamin C supplements, this vitamin C is highly absorbable due to its patented delivery system and is much more potent than standard vitamin C supplements. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties which if absorbed efficiently by the body, can boost all tissue and body repair, immune function, decrease virus replication, increase metabolism, endurance, and energy. Vitamin C in itself helps to ward off the common cold and flu virus while also helping to speed recovery from various types of infections and injuries. Vitamin C is often attributed to its role as an antioxidant. However, it is much more than that. 3. Taking a little bit of oil of oregano might also be helpful at this time of the year.

If you know you are going to come in contact with someone who might be coming down with a virus. Oil of oregano has been our go-to natural antibiotic for years and P73 by North American Herb & Spice is by far our favorite line to turn to when we think we might be coming down with something. Oregano has a multitude of uses but according to WebMD (2), it may be used for respiratory tract disorders such as coughs and bronchitis. It can help with sinus pain, colds, and flus, including swine flu and if applied topically can help with muscle pain however, more evidence is needed to support these claims. Oregano might also be helpful to fight against some bacteria, viruses, fungi, intestinal worms, and other parasites, that’s why it’s always been a staple in our natural medicine cabinet. If oil of oregano is too powerful you may want to try olive leaf extract as an alternative option.

4. Regularly consume fermented or probiotic-rich foods.

Eating fermented or probiotic-rich foods will help to keep your gut in tip-top shape and strengthen your immune system. The first line of defense against viral and bacterial infections is your own God-given immune system and guess how much of it resides in your gut? A whopping 70%! So, keeping those little critters that make up your microbiome happy is essential to building a strong immune system that can ward off unwanted invaders. We eat homemade fermented vegetables almost every day and if they are not readily available because we didn’t feel like making them that week, I make sure to supplement with a high-quality multi-strain probiotic. However, there are some half-decent fermented vegetable options now available at some local health food stores just make sure to look for those that are fermented with live cultures found in the refrigeration section.

5. Consider taking fulvic acid.

I like to call Fulvic Acid natures natural minerals. While some will say any minerals will do, Kevin and I are partial to supplements and herbs that can be found naturally in our environment because mother nature knows best. Fulvic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in oceans, dystrophic lakes, peat, coal, and the soil. When organic matter decomposes, it creates an intricate material. Humic substances like fulvic acid are capable of boosting our ability to absorb nutrients and minerals. It also helps to support our bodies through detoxification from harmful environmental pollutants that can make you more susceptible to infections like heavy metals. Some say it can even neutralize EMF radiation, is a powerful electrolyte, can increase energy, while also being a great antimicrobial agent (3) to control pathogens and helps to prevent the formation of biofilms (4).


6. Consider taking Cannabis Sativa Hemp seed oil and other foods rich in essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.

7. Trade-in your morning coffee for a warm cup of ginger tea.

Ginger and turmeric root have a long list of health benefits but the therapeutic doses of ginger or turmeric which can help to support the liver must be consumed in either powdered form, tinctures or medicinal teas. These two herbs have been reported to be exceptionally helpful during cold and flu season. 8. Be sure to get an appropriate amount of healthy sunlight every day while being cautious of your blue light toxicity from cell phones, smart TV's and LED lighting.

Turn your devices off after dark or get some Blue Light Blockers. Exposure to too much blue light suppresses your melatonin production making it difficult for you to have a restful night’s sleep which then throws off your circadian biology. In turn, these poor light habits can wreak havoc on all of your biological systems leaving you open and susceptible to contracting numerous bacterial and viral infections. Studies have even shown that Blue light also allows certain types of pathogens and yeasts to flourish systemically in the human body leading to a whole host of health conditions if left unaddressed long term.

9. Be mindful of your EMF exposure which can damage DNA and drain your cells of the much-needed energy to help ward off infections.

A body that is well hydrated, mineral-rich and saturated with light is virtually indestructible and more likely to ward off unwanted invaders. Many run off to the doctor to get their flu shot at the first sign of cold and flu season while ignoring what our immune systems truly needs to help prevent infections. According to the CDC, the overall vaccine effectiveness (VE) of the 2017-2018 flu vaccine against both influenza A and B viruses was only estimated to be 40% effective leaving the other 60% that were vaccinated susceptible to the virus. Also, those numbers are more than likely grossly exaggerated.

“Year after year they have quoted observational studies to announce, “…80% vaccine effectiveness…60% effectiveness…40% effectiveness…” They do not mention that these studies make no effort to look for adverse vaccine effects (e.g. narcolepsy, seizures, high fever, oculorespiratory syndrome) or that, a vaccine “effective” in one season may increase influenza risk in a subsequent season.
